Darlington Bands awards Mr. Joshua Barcus with the Staff Member of the Year Award.
Joshua Barcus is a native of Darlington, SC. He attended Mayo Magnet School for Math, Science & Technology and graduated in 2013. After High School, Mr. Barcus attended the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC where he joined the Kappa Kappa Psi, National Honorary Band Fraternity. After a year at USC, Joshua attended Alabama State University where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education and Music Performance. His instrumental concentration was the Alto Saxophone, studying under Dr. Michael Pendowski. Joshua Barcus has performed at many different venues such as the AMEA Intercollegiate Band in 2016, special guest wind quartet performer at AMEA, Churches, the Montgomery Performance Assessment, and 3 seasons with the Capitol Sounds Wind ensemble located in Montgomery, Alabama.
Joshua became a member of the Marching Falcons of Darlington in 2009. As a member, he served as Saxophone Assistant Section Leader, Saxophone Section Leader, Woodwind Captain, and Band Captain. Joshua served under the leadership of former directors Xavier Whitfield, Billie Williamson, Cole Davis and Christopher Simpson
Mr. Barcus currently serves as the Music Director at Lamar-Spaulding Elementary School located in Lamar, SC and now serves as Director at Virtus Academy in Florence, SC.
After speaking with Mr. Johnson, Director of Bands at Darlington High School, he says that "Josh is definitely deserving of this award. Mr. Barcus always works with integrity and does what's in the best interest of the students. He never complains when it comes to doing his part in our great program. It was no surprise that the students nominated him for such an award."
